Leaking Taps

It can be extremely annoying and troublesome to deal with leaking taps in your home. Older tap fixtures tend to start leaking after some time and should be fixed without delay. Aside from the annoyance factor, the leaks also result in significant water wastage. Fixing tap leaks isn’t always a complicated task. Depending on what the problem is, you can also fix it yourself but would need some essential tools to get the job done.

You can find these tools at local hardware stores very quickly if you don’t have them.  It’s far better to hire experts like us at SPS Plumbers Hills District for all types of plumbing jobs, big and small. When we handle the job, you can be sure that the best materials and products will be used and that the job will be completed correctly the first time around. However, here are some steps to take to fix tap leaks:

1. Turn off The Water Connection to the Tap

Peer into the cabinet under the sink to locate the knob to stop the water flow to the tap. If you can’t find it there, look in the basement or crawl space and turn off the water. Next, open the faucet and make sure that all the water in the pipe flows out.

2. Identify Whether the Tap Has a Washer /Ceramic Faucet

If you have a traditional faucet with cold and hot water taps that can be turned clockwise/counter-clockwise, it’s possibly a washer facet. If the faucet has a lever that can be swivelled or pulled up to get cold or hot water, it means you have a ceramic faucet.

3. Remove the Tap Cover

Most taps have small plastic covers on the top; use a flat head screwdriver to pry it loose. Underneath it, you’ll find screws, which you need to remove carefully. Make a note of the order in which you removed them.

4. Use A Crescent Wrench to Remove a Washer Faucet

It may seem like the washers are secured with a centre screw, flush against the top. In some tap models, they are fitted around a copper cylinder. Washers are very reasonably priced, so remove all of them and take them to your local hardware store to get the right replacement parts.

It will help to ensure that your new washers are a perfect match for the ones you had. Then all you have to do is replace the old and worn ones with the new parts. Reassemble the faucet carefully, and the leak will be fixed.

Not everyone has the time, patience, and tools to handle tap repairs and leaks themselves. It’s why you should call in Sydney plumbers like us for the job. We are committed to providing the client with the best solutions at the best pricing.
